Throwing things at a newly married couple is a very old tradition that may date back to ancient Rome or Egypt or even further back. The custom is intended to give newlyweds good luck, and most of the items thrown at the couple represent fertility and abundance.

The RiceButterflies website recommends that you will need at least 10 boxes of rice butterflies for a smaller wedding, but you might want to double that if you're planning to make your farewell a grand exit. Oh, and before you decide to have rice thrown at your wedding, make sure you confirm with you venue that it is allowed.

I'm just glad that there is actually a stylish wedding rice alternative that looks great and keeps this newlywed tradition intact.

  1. These are pretty cool! Glad you mentioned to check with your venue before planning on having rice thrown at your event. Some places are adamantly against it. Great idea though for somewhere that allows it!
